What means most to a child in a rural primary school? From chatting with rural villagers, the answer is clear. Knowledge!
Unlike children in the cities, it is not easy to find reading materials such as story books. Bookstores and libraries are a rarity. In addition, most rural families do not have the financial means to buy books for their children. Many are therefore left behind in the quest for knowledge.
A library is therefore a life-changing gift for these children.

In response to the needs of rural children, The St. Regis Chengdu started establishing STAR libraries with the aim of making knowledge readily available to children growing up in rural areas.
Back in November 2013, 22 hotel volunteers spent weeks collecting hundreds of books. Appealing to family, friends and neighbours, these associates went door to door and over many days collected hundreds of English and Chinese story books as well as educational resources. Later that year, these books were finally cleaned up and mended and housed in the brand new STAR Library the hotel started for Jixing Primary School.
A year later, our volunteers traversed the same route, this time establishing a new STAR Library for neighbouring Fenghua Primary School.
With the establishment of the two STAR libraries, we are seeding new dreams for these rural children. With the many resources, the children are now exposed to new knowledge and can dare to dream new dreams.
