Starwood Asia Pacific Hotels & Resorts added another feather to its cap when we received the Best Practice in Leadership Development accolade at the prestigious China HR Staff Awards 2014 held in Suzhou, China. This is our first time participating in the prestigious Awards known as the Oscars within the HR fraternity.

Starwood Asia Pacific is one of 13 organizations honored in the annual awards that bestow recognition to organizations with the best practices in key areas of human capital management and development. 2014 winners include Parker Hannifin, ABB, HP Education, Microsoft Asia Pacific and Stanley Black & Decker. With this win, we join past Award luminaries including Amway, Deloitte Human Capital Advisory Service, Shell, Standard Chartered Bank and Autodesk.

Fiercely-Contested Awards
The 2014 Awards received 562 nominations from both local and foreign enterprises. Of these, 38 nominations were selected by a panel of judges as finalists after a rigorous round of shortlisting. An online voting was then open to HR professionals to determine the eventual winners.

Said Award organizer, Ms. Zhang Shasha, Wolters Kluwer (China) CEO, “2014 is a challenging year for businesses operating in Greater China and companies are beginning to recognize the importance of good HR practices in the war for talent. Organizations must shift from HR administration in the traditional sense to that of strategic management of the organization for enterprises to stay competitive. The 2014 Award winning practices serve as benchmarks that will inspire businesses to reinvent their human development management and practices.”

The Best Practice in Leadership Development award is bestowed on the organization that has clear and well-executed strategies in talent selection, motivation and development at all associate levels. The award recognizes outstanding programs such as formal coaching and mentoring programs that help develop and nurture potential successors to ensure business continuity. To win, we had to demonstrate to a panel of judges as well as a team of professional juries that we have a talent management and development program, namely STARWOOD CAREERS, that is aligned to our Starwood vision.

In the same Awards, through our work with STARWOOD CARES, after a stringent round of selection, we also made finalist for the Best Practice in Engagement and Retention award that sought to recognize high performing companies that successfully and meaningfully kept their most valued employees engaged. It is highly rewarding that out of 38 finalist places, Starwood Asia Pacific was honored with two.

Inaugurated in 1998, The China Staff Award with its stellar 17-year history has established itself as one of the most reputable HR Awards in Greater China. Our attainment of the Award places us on par with multinational companies whose people practices are amongst the best in the region, if not globally.

We thank our property GMs, management, direct managers and mentors and our ever-dedicated associates for giving of your best in 2014 and creating a healthy talent eco‐system that cultivates a flourishing learning environment for each and every Starwood associate.
