The journey to the AICR International Receptionist of the Year 2014 Competition began in June 2013 for Gwendolyn Chia, Guest Services Agent at The St Regis Singapore when she was selected to represent the hotel. With slightly more than one year’s experience under her belt, she put in her best efforts to compete with 39 other candidates for the 2013 Association of Rooms Division Executives (Singapore) Receptionist of the Year Competition.

In the finals on 29th November 2013, she beat 11 finalists to clinch the title ‘Receptionist of the Year 2013’ and earned the opportunity to represent Singapore at the AICR International Receptionist of the Year 2014 in Hamburg, Germany. Before she had time to recover fully from the surprise at her win, Gwen (as she is known to us) was busy preparing for the international competition and worrying about how she will deal with the cold weather in Hamburg!

In the AICR International Receptionist of the Year 2014, the 14 finalists were put to the test in the question-and-answer-session and role play scenarios before an international panel from the hotel and tourism industry. It was a keenly contested competition in which 4 winners were named instead of the usual 3. On Day 4, the winner was finally announced. In the wee hours on 19th January 2014, a bleary-eyed, Cameron Cundle, Director of Front Office received a phone call from an excited Gwen who announced the wonderful news that she won the AICR International Receptionist of the Year 2014 Competition! Gwen’s confident performance in the role play thoroughly impressed the judges and she beat 13 other contenders from all over the world to clinch the award.

This is indeed an exceptional start to 2014 for Gwen and also all of us here at The St Regis Singapore!
