Our 2014 Starwood Cares President’s Award Winners were in for a treat when they flew to Bangkok to receive their awards.

As part of their prize, the winners get to bring along a partner with them to enjoy the trip. For some of the winners, flying out on a plane to another country was their first experience and a highly exciting one.

In 2013, Four Points by Sheraton Sydney, Darling Harbour underwent an AUD $27 million (USD 25.4 million) refurbishment which saw us adopting green standards and technologies that would help us better manage our power consumption and reduce our carbon footprint significantly. With the Starwood-wide 20/30 by 20 initiative as our driving force, our Engineering department took the lead in incorporating energy savings initiatives, tapping into the latest technological advancements.

2013 was a particularly challenging year for the Purchasing team at Westin Beijing Financial Street. The market saw huge fluctuations in the cost of raw materials. Unless carefully managed, the hotel might end up with a big increase in its spending to keep its operations going. To prevent this, the department took the initiative to tighten its cost control measures. Specifically, associates closely monitored the price and supply situation of key supplies such as milk.

Deeply committed to Starwood 20/30 by 20 goal, the Engineering team from Sheraton Zhongshan worked hard to find ways to reduce wastage of resources. As the airconditioning of guest rooms was one of the biggest energy consumption components in the hotel, the team decided to take a look at how consumption could be lowered even without changing guest behavior. After a period of serious study and review, in 2013, the department started installing timers that better regulated the cooling of guest rooms, preventing any wastage in energy.

Associates from Sheraton Nha Trang Hotel & Spa first chanced upon Nhan Ai orphanage that lay nestled in a forgotten part of the city in 2011. Since our first encounter with the staff and orphans at the orphanage, we have made a commitment to provide sustained help to them for the long haul. Once to twice a month, our associates would take turns to visit the orphanage, bringing with them daily necessities such as rice, milk powder, biscuits, clothes and stationery for the orphans and for 5 elderly homeless.
